“Surapong” Proposes Command Center for Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal to Tackle Waste, Traffic, and Area Management

Mr. Surapong Piyachote, Deputy Minister of Transport, has directed his advisory team to inspect and address waste management issues at the Bangkok Bus Terminal (Chatuchak), commonly known as Mo Chit 2, in collaboration with The Transport Company Limited (BorKorSor) and the Department of Land Transport (DLT).

Findings from the Site Inspection

The inspection revealed that the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) and BorKorSor have made progress in clearing waste around the area. However, nearby activities, including mor lam performances, unauthorized food carts, and the parking of public and private vehicles (e.g., charter buses, taxis, and personal cars), were identified as contributing factors to the waste problem.

Proposed Solutions

The advisory team recommended establishing a Command Center to coordinate efforts among relevant agencies, including:

  • Department of Land Transport (DLT)
  • State Railway of Thailand (SRT)
  • Royal Thai Police
  • Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA)
  • BorKorSor

This center would address overlapping jurisdictional issues and tackle problems such as:

  1. Waste Management
  2. Road Maintenance (e.g., potholes)
  3. Traffic Control

The goal is to implement concrete and sustainable solutions.

BorKorSor’s Initial Measures

Although the area behind Mo Chit 2 is not under BorKorSor’s jurisdiction, the company has proactively taken the following steps to ensure order:

  1. Notice to Operators:

    • BorKorSor has issued notices to all affiliated bus operators, prohibiting unauthorized parking in the area. Violators will face penalties, including fines and suspension of vehicle use, in accordance with company regulations.
  2. Alternative Parking Arrangements:

    • Operators are permitted to park at their own depots or designated areas at the terminal.
    • BorKorSor is coordinating with the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) to request additional parking space within BMTA areas.

Conclusion

The proposed Command Center and collaborative efforts aim to create a cleaner, safer, and more organized environment around Mo Chit 2. BorKorSor’s commitment to addressing these challenges demonstrates its dedication to improving service quality and maintaining the terminal as a key hub for public transportation in Bangkok.
